How to Get Better at Feeling which Breaks Vices

The next time you are upset (sad, angry, stressed) and want to reach for the TV, buy stuff, drink alcohol, or numb out in any other form - I invite (and challenge) you to...

Pause. Stop. Take a minute. And SIT with the feeling instead.

Even if for just 60 seconds.

Feelings have an arc.

This means we start feeling them, they have a peak, and then they go down like an arc shape and we feel better after we let ourselves truly feel our feelings.

Sometimes though, we assume our feelings will last forever or we feel we “can’t handle” our feelings so we numb out, avoid, or make decisions while upset (especially when we are at the top of the arc).

If we make choices when we are upset it increases the chances we regret whatever we do or feel shame about it.

All of this can be healed if we just stop and sit with our feelings for a minute and just let things be.

Feelings do NOT last forever.

Yes, you CAN handle your feelings, and they will naturally go away if honored and processed correctly :)

I have to remind myself of this stuff all the time!

Life comes with lots of feelings. When we get better at actually feeling, life becomes easier :)
