How to Use Your Body to Process Emotions Faster
It’s helpful to remember that our brains process emotions/things/events through *thinking* BUT our bodies process emotions/events/things through *movement.*
Trying to think our way through everything puts a lot of pressure on our brains and is not always as effective.
A lot of us act like we are just floating brains walking around (lol). But we have BODIES too and they have their own language. When our bodies are stressed out or upset in any way, places tighten up and constrict.
Common places are the jaw, throat, chest, and stomach.
The body processes anger through pushing. It processes sadness through receiving pressure. And it processes anxiety through vigorous, fast movements (running, dancing, jumping, stomping, shaking).
When we create a combo of double-processing; of top-down processing (thinking with the brain then using our body) or bottom-up processing (using the body first and then thinking through things) we get where we wanna go so much faster.
And we regulate our emotions quickly.
And we allow ourselves to fully feel emotions which helps them actually move through and not get stuck.
If we don’t MOVE when we are upset, 50% of all those stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline, etc) go straight to our gut and wreak havoc on our digestion.
I have to remind myself of this all the time. Move and think. Move and think. Move and think.
