How to Use Different Parts of Ourselves to Get What We Want

We have different parts of ourselves. These parts have their own beliefs, their own habits, their own tone of voice, impulses, and live in different parts of our bodies. It’s a different take on us having just “one mind” but this belief system is that we have many minds within one.

One part might be an inner critic who never lets up on us and is always pushing or demeaning us. Another part could be a sad part. A rager part. An anxious little child part. All of these parts can run the show and this is when we might make choices or say things that we regret later on. It creates self-doubt, frustration, and sometimes even a lack of follow through as well.

And when the quality of a part we are operating from and the quality of what we are trying to do or who we are trying to become do not match, we have inner conflict, indecisiveness, and regret.

It’s tough to come from our logical practical part when we are pursuing a career change into a very risky, creative career.

The logical part of us is going to make all kinds of excuses and have all kinds of beliefs and put up all kinds of roadblocks to this creative, risky endeavor.

It’s a tough to come from a lackadaisical part who doesn’t really care about anything when we are trying to get healthier and increase our self-care.

This part of us might come up with excuses, reasons, and other things to do besides the healthy habits we are trying to implement.

Maybe the inner rager part hurts our partner and pushes them away when we let it take control.

So what can we do?

We can find a balance between all the parts. We help them work together instead of against. We integrate, accept, love, and work with - all of them.

We can practice becoming the type of person we need to BE in order to do the thing we want to DO. We practice shifting into our true self, who is calm, clear, curious, compassionate, connected, courageous, creative, and confident.

The soul part of us.

The part that is authentically happy and at peace.

The part of us that truly wants the best for ourselves.

This is the part we can practice operating from by tending to and working with all the other parts to make space first.

Working on the level of identity is the deepest layer we can work on in self-development. So I invite you to ask yourself:

Who do you have to become to get what you want? What parts of you do you need to tend to in order to make space for what you want? What part of you do you want to take action from? What feeling or state of mind do you want to make decisions from?

The quality of our being-ness directly affects the quality of what we do.

What parts of you are present that you can think of? What would you like to name them? What type of things do they typically say, believe, or do?
