How to Know if You Are “Coachable”

This is a wonderful perspective to know about and will help you determine if you are ready to start working with a professional life coach. So let’s dive in.

What does the term “coachable” mean?

Being coachable means that you are willing to let the coach coach you. You are open to being challenged, you are open to change, you are willing to commit to creating shifts in your life, and you are open to other perspectives and mindset shifts that you may not have thought of before. Being coachable means that you have an openness, a willingness, to see yourself and your situation differently, to follow through with the action plans that you determine with your life coach each week.

Some examples of being coachable:

  • Being open-minded

  • Being flexible with your goals

  • Feeling ready to take action in order to initiate changes and reach your goals

  • A willingness to let your current beliefs be dissected, explored, challenged, and released

  • Trusting that you don’t have all the answers and getting guidance is okay & acceptable

  • Being okay with being seen & witnessed in a sometimes vulnerable way

These are just a few examples of what someone who is coachable might be like. When we are coachable, we are likely to get much better results in our lives when working with a professional life coach. The clients that I work with that create successful results in their lives are open-minded and willing to do the work to create positive change in their lives. Now what “that work” looks like will greatly vary from person to person, and since ICF trained life coaches like myself practice client-lead coaching, we always allow our clients to choose and create their own actions plans week by week depending on what was discussed in the coaching sessions.

So the positive shifts and changes are as slow or fast as you’d like them to be. I hope you enjoyed this article on how to know if you are coachable!
