3 Tips for More Motivation + the TRUTH about Motivation
“How do I stay motivated?”
This is a very common question that coaching clients ask me - and ask themselves - and I have some amazing tips today for you that will massively help with this. Firstly, I want you to know…
That staying motivated all the time is not possible. Motivation is a *feeling*, and feelings come and go, which is normal and natural, so please don’t think there’s something wrong with you or that you are lazy. You aren’t. You just didn’t learn Motivation 101 in school, don’t worry, none of us did!
Secondly…
Many of us think we need to feel motivated *first* to take action. That is not necessarily true. We cannot use our feelings as a barometer for change, simply because our feelings change. Relying on feeling a certain way before we do something is a recipe for inconsistency which can cause a lot of self-doubt, luckily there is another way!
Thirdly…
Motivation is actually a by-product of consistent action. The more action we take consistently, the more motivation and momentum we build up. We can choose to take action first and have faith that the motivation will definitely build.
So! Here are 3 tips to get you more motivated:
Since I am not on a coaching call with you right now and I do not know what specifically needs to be addressed/what’s in the way for you to get more motivated, I will give you some universal tips that have helped me and my clients:
Tip #1 - Get your brain on your side by cultivating a better mindset, what this looks like will vary from person to person. A coaching question for you: What will help me have more helpful thoughts around motivation?
Tip #2 - Anchor in a deeper why. Keep asking yourself *why* until you peel back the layers and get to the juicy, emotional reasons why you want this. A coaching question for you: What is it that I really want that I get to have when I achieve this goal? In my experience, there’s always a “goal beneath the goal.”
Tip # 3 - Have a plan for off-days. Days when you feel like crap, aren’t motivated, or everything seems to be going wrong. A coaching question for you: What can you put into place that will pull you through these days when you don’t feel like doing the things you know you should be?
